We are about to finish the final semester of the decade. It's been a semester full of hope, surprises, school spirit and new beginnings. We remember the two highly respected assistant coaches who died; the students who rallied to get the Illinois Monetary Award Program grant back and succeeded; the local area businesses we loved that closed their doors; and the students who have been here to witness it all.

One of the nicer things about the semester is when students arrived on campus, they were happy to see a bunch of new technology, such as the new computers in the library and Gregg computer lab, and SMART boards in a number of buildings on campus.

On top of that, a few days later, the Student Success Center's new home was completed.

Eastern's own WEIU-TV received a nomination for an Emmy award in September, and then came around to win for best student news production for 2009 in October.

This semester was also the first time Eastern put out the blue "No Smoking" signs on the ground to encourage students to stand 25 feet away from the buildings when they smoke, as opposed to 15 feet. This angered smokers, but was beneficial to other students.

But that's not all the smoke that was around this semester.

Two mock dorm rooms (one with a sprinkler system and one without) were set on fire in the south quad as a demonstration for fire safety in the beginning of October. This event exhibited all the benefits for having a sprinkler system as well as teaching students about fire safety.

During Family Weekend, after two years of trying, the University Board was able to get Styx to perform this October at its concert.

But they were not the only celebrities to show up on campus this semester.

During Homecoming Week, Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys came and appeared in the Homecoming Parade as well as on the football field. Romo was inducted into Eastern's Athletic Hall of Fame and had his No. 17 retired.

One of the most annoying parts of the semester was when Eastern's campus was infested with the Asian lady beetles at the end of October.
