The first of the six candidates for the College of Arts and Humanities dean position will visit campus today.

Marilyn Levine, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Oregon University since 2005, will be on campus today and Tuesday for interviews and tours.

An open session will be held at 4 p.m. today in the College of Arts and Humanities dean's conference room and 9 a.m. Tuesday in Room 3732 of Coleman Hall.

Her visit will conclude with a community tour at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Levine has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago. She received her master's degree in history from the University of Hawaii and her bachelor's degree from San Diego University.

Past positions have included chair of the division of social sciences at Lewis-Clark State College from 2001 to 2005 and professor at Lewis-Clark since 1989.

The other candidates in the dean search include: Steven Brown, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kans.; Elisabeth Mermann-Jozwiak, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A & M in Corpus Christi, Texas; Bonnie Irwin, dean of the Honors College at Eastern Illinois; Elizabeth Dunn, interim dean of the College of Arts and Letters at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn.; and Roger Smitter, executive director of the National Communication Association in Washington, D.C., from 2004-2009.

Mary Anne Hanner, search committee chair and Dean of the College of Sciences, said the candidates were selected after reviewing their resumes and visiting with them via a telephone interview.

"The search committee is very pleased that six highly qualified candidates will be interviewing on campus," she said. "They all have significant administrative experiences and academic credentials."

The final candidate's interview will conclude Dec. 17.

"The search committee plans to provide the provost with a summary of the campus feedback and the candidates' strengths and any concerns on Dec. 18," Hanner said.

She said campus input is important to the process.

"The search committee urges the faculty, staff and students of the College of Arts and Humanities and the entire campus to participate in all the interviews and provide feedback to the committee," Hanner said.
