This new policy is part of the revisions of the Internal Governing Policy, which was approved by President Bill Perry Sept. 28.
"There are at least 50 posting locations throughout campus, and frequently they become a mess with 'postings on top of postings,' as well as outdated and incomplete information," said Dan Nadler, vice president for student affairs.
The old policy was focused primarily on fliers in the Martin Luther King, Jr. University Union. Expiration date requirements and requirements regarding the organization or sponsor names, or time, date and location of events were not included in the previous policy.
The new policy states that all fliers in public areas have a 30-day posting period and need advance approval from Campus Scheduling. Each flier will be stamped with the date and only one copy of the flier can be posted on a bulletin board.
"Students frequently discussed how the bulletin boards were ineffective as an advertising tool, especially in a free-for-all environment," Nadler said. "The revised (policy) allows us to remove out-of-date postings in a more efficient and effective manner."
The official notice states that "no announcements, advertising, signs or printed matter may be placed on the interior or exterior walls, windows or doors of any building, on trees, lamp posts, trash containers, fences, sidewalks, grounds or equipment of the university."
Fliers can only be posted on designated bulletin boards. The policy pertains to boards in residence and dining halls, but not individual offices.
On these boards, only registered student organizations or off-campus public service organizations may post fliers regarding on-campus activities or events of educational or public service interest to the Eastern community.
Another section of the policy states that postings cannot exceed an 11 inches by 27 inches in size, and the use of tape or commercial staple guns is prohibited. To view the entire policy, go to http://www.eiu.edu/~auditing/IGP/policy138.1.html.

I think this is a good idea. While it is a little more red tape to go through, it does ensure that students who have a great message or event will be able to have it seen by others without other "garbage" getting in the way. (Continued…)

Anyone with reasonable awareness of the ways in which university communities function knows that "messy" and informal posting is evidence of a lively community. (Continued…)

Too bad most all of the bulletin boards around campus are too inconveniently located to be noticed or useful. Almost every flier I've ever read has been upon the doors of Coleman Hall or the windows of the various offices. (Continued…)

So this policy was put in place in September, yet we're just now finding out about it? I highly doubt that this is for our own good if they've hid this from us for this long. (Continued…)

What a terrible idea! It takes only common sense to figure out that student retention is directly related to social and academic opportunities for students. (Continued…)

Besides the fact that I believe this is a poor policy, it will be intersting to see if this is actually enforced. With so many places to post on campus, how will they all actually be "policed. (Continued…)

First of all, I DO believe that Eastern should have many public boards, public outside kiosks and other areas that can be used - but not overused or abused - by the general public for advertising events, opinions and needs/wants. (Continued…)

I think this is a ridiculous policy. First off, that office will be overloaded with requests. Second, there should be at least one place where any kind of flier can be posted. (Continued…)
