Moldy Food. Rancid Smells. Ghosts.

All of these things would be found at a traditional Death Day celebration in the pages of "Harry Potter" by J.K. Rowling.

Hogwart's Death Day celebration has an abundance of rotting food, but Eastern's Harry Potter registered student organization changes it up, incorporating the theme of Halloween with a Harry Potter twist leaving out the moldy cuisine.

One of the popular Harry Potter treats, butterbeer, will be served at the Death Day party. Paul Wiberg, five-year member and last year's president, shared the secret to brewing a tasty butterbeer.

"Butterbeer is basically made with butterscotch crème soda and butter, then boiled," Wiberg said.

Other treats like Halloween candy, jellybeans and other Harry Potter themed items will be at the Death Day celebration but Sarah Huber, vice-president, believes butterbeer is something special.

"Everyone needs to experience butterbeer," Huber said.

Huber plans for a Harry Potter spin on the role-playing game "mafia" to be part of tonight's festivities in addition to many other Halloween activities.

"At the party we will be pumpkin painting, playing games like mafia and having a costume contest," Huber said.

In the Harry Potter spirit, one of the activities at the Death Day party will be wand making. These wands will not be made out of wood, but candy wands in the Halloween spirit.

"We're going to be making licorice wands which is basically a stick or licorice dipped in chocolate and then we get to carry around and play with or simply eat them," Huber said.

This year's death day celebration takes place tonight in Pemberton Hall at 6 p.m. until midnight. The Potter RSO enjoys holding the death day celebration at Pemberton because of its castle-like structure which ties into the Harry Potter theme.

"The castle just adds that extra element of Halloween and Harry Potter to the party," Wiberg said.

Emma Walsh, president, enjoys the death day celebrations because it brings everyone together.

"The most exciting thing about the party is getting together with other Harry Potter fans, dressing up and just having fun," Walsh said.

The Potter RSO meets at 8 p.m. every Thursday in Coleman 2130.
