Mara Hampton, the previous winner of the Eastern Illinois University Annuitants Association Scholarship, said hard work has its rewards.
Hampton, a senior communication disorders science major, said she was excited and surprised when she was awarded the scholarship in 2008 for this school year.
"I know many students have family members who are employed at Eastern, so I did not know how many people would apply for the scholarship," she said.
Hampton said her mother is currently a professor at Eastern, and her grandfather worked in Information Technology Systems before he retired.
She said working hard to keep a high grade point average, staying involved in organizations and volunteering is what helped her in achieving the scholarship.
"I was rewarded $500 my junior year, which helped pay for semester fees," Hampton said.
The Eastern Illinois University Annuitants Association is accepting applications for the EIUAA scholarship.
The association joined the Eastern Illinois University Foundation and established this scholarship in October 2006.
Jayne Ozier, vice president of the association, said the association decided to establish this scholarship to demonstrate the continued support for quality education and talented Eastern students.
"Since the recipient is the child or grandchild of current Eastern employees or retired employees it honors those who serve Eastern," Ozier said.
During the annual Eastern Annuitants luncheon on Jan. 22, 2010, the recipient's name will be added to the Eastern Scholarship Award plaque in the Neal Welcome Center, she said.
Applications must be submitted no later than Nov. 18, 2009 to EIUAA at the Brainard House, 600 Lincoln Ave.
