Briefs: Boykins earns conference honors

Eastern sophomore middle blocker Melanie Boykins was named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her performance in the team's weekend matches against Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech.
Boykins registered 16 kills against Jacksonville State and had 13 against Tennessee Tech as the Panthers finished the weekend 1-1 in OVC play. Her 16 kills against the Gamecocks was a career-high.
She also finished with a .434 attack percentage for the weekend.
Eastern football enters polls
After surviving its weekend game at Southeast Missouri to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2001, the Eastern football team entered the weekly polls, ranking 24th in the nation in the Sports Network's Top 25.
This marks the first time the Panthers have been ranking since falling out of the Top 25 after the sixth week of the 2008 season.
The Panthers also were the second team receiving votes in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches poll with 33 points.
