A Tech Bytes demonstration on Twitter, a micro-blogging tool that allows users to send and receive messages known as "Tweets", will be held at noon today in the CATS Training Lab, room 1205 in McAfee Gymnasium.

Gus Albear, assistant professor of secondary education and foundation, warns that technology can be a two-edged sword.

"Technology can hurt students when it becomes a crutch instead of an aid to achieve a higher level of knowledge," Albear said.

Albear said technology in the classroom can be a good thing as long as the goal is to benefit humanity.

Technology in the classroom becomes a nuisance when it aids students in taking the easy way out of assignments, he said.

Today's demonstration aims to explore the possibilities of using Twitter in the classroom.

Twitter can provide engagement with participants in seminars, workshops or the classroom without being detrimental to the learning environment.

Participants are invited to bring their own laptop or mobile web device to tweet along with the demonstration.

The seminar will be held by Antoine Thomas, after which the participants can register for detailed workshops through TECnet to learn more about specific technology.
