Students riled in a spiral formation at the South Quad Thursday night. They greeted other incoming students as they walked and ran through the formation.

This kicked off the New Student Mixer: Mix It Up, sponsored by the University Board and the Office of Orientation.

Meagan Prahl, a representative from Playfair, led students in "getting to know you" activities. Playfair is an organization that inspires and builds teamwork.

Before that, new students had a sexual assault and fire training seminar at 7 p.m. in the South Quad dining halls-the men in Thomas Dining and the women in Taylor Dining.

While the new students attended the seminar, members of the PROWL program were lead in team-building exercises and taught crowd control and safety by Prahl in the South Quad.

As Prahl led the incoming students through the activities, some returning students showed up to meet the new students.

Colin Plach, a senior career and technology education major, and member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, said he has high expectations for new students.

"I'm hoping to see more involvement on campus, continue to go to football games," Plach said. "(I want them to) be what it means to be a Panther."

The UB, Panther Nation and the University Book Store had representatives set up under a tent in the quad to greet students and try to involve them in campus activities.

The UB passed out free T-shirts, snow cones and popcorn, and had a hand sanitizing station next to the food tables.

UB member Matt Caponera helped emcee the event by greeting new students after PROWL was finished.

The Apple representative from the University Book Store raffled off an iPod Shuffle. Those who did not win last night were automatically entered into the raffle for Saturday's Quakin' in the Quad event. The prize will be an iPod Touch.

Lauren Phillips and Otis Seawood, Jr. from the UB coordinated the event, in conjuction with the Office of Orientation.

The UB is given a budget by the university, which is approved by Student Government, and then divided between the different coordinators. The money is then used to put on special events for students, such as concerts, lectures, movies and events.

The UB is sponsoring Up All Night: Fantasy Factory tonight at 8 in the Martin Luther King, Jr. University Union. The event includes a virtual-reality Pac-Man game, Blizzard of Bucks game show with cash prizes, laser tag, body art and free t-shirts. Comedian Theo Von, of Comedy Central's "Reality Bites Back," "Live at Gotham" and NBC's "Last Comic Standing," will perform in the 7th Street Underground at 9 as part of the event.

Quakin' in the Quad: Jammin' Jamaica will be held Saturday evening at 7 in the South Quad. Quakin' in the Quad will feature free food, T-shirts and prize raffles. There will also be live entertainment by Aaron Kamm and The One Drops, a rock wall, an extreme trampoline, a live reptile and amphibian show and bingo.
