Letter to the Editor: Eckert an excellent choice
Issue date: 5/4/09 Section: Opinions
Members of the sociology and anthropology faculty were informed two weeks ago that Professor Craig Eckert will officially be their next chair.
I couldn't envision anything better for the department that has become my second home.
As a young lad who had just transferred to Eastern, I wandered campus aimlessly and began devising potential exit plans. Fortunately for me, I was enrolled in Eckert's Sociology of Sport class. The lengths he went to make me feel welcome at Eastern surprised me and were successful.
Eckert is very personable and, without question, will go the extra mile for students.
I'm quite pleased with what I've been able to accomplish in my two years at Eastern, and I owe much of that to the unwavering mentorship Eckert provided.
His comical obsession with brushing his teeth will always live with me, but Eckert's enthusiasm, compassion and integrity is what I will always admire and strive for in life.
Never will I forget the passion Eckert displayed during his Vietnam lecture in my political sociology class. Sweat was visible on his face, and he nearly collapsed after class.
Little did we know that he had forgotten his lecture notes at home in Philo, and had just taught the entire three-hour class from memory.
The retirement of Gary Foster will be a difficult blow to recover from, but Eastern won't find a better successor than Eckert.
