Trumpet player Jeff Helgesen has performed and recorded with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole and Ray Charles.

He will be on campus to play with the EIU Jazz Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. today in The Theatre of Doudna Fine Arts Center.

Helgesen, an active member for more than 25 years in the east-central Illinois music scene, is one of three special guest musicians appearing in the ensemble's spring concert.

Allan Horney, former jazz ensemble director and a trombonist, will be featured on a swinging arrangement of "Making Whoopie."

This will be Horney's final show with Eastern, as he is retiring after this semester.

Vocalist Trish Marcus, of Winchester, Ky., will be featured on her son's arrangement of "My Foolish Heart" by Victor Young and Ned Washington.

Her son is lead alto saxophonist Joshua Marcus, who will perform alongside his mother for his final performance before graduating.

The EIU Jazz Ensemble will perform classic and contemporary big-band music for the spring concert.

EIU Jazz Ensemble director Sam Fagaly said the concert will be the biggest concert the group has had this year.

Students will perform more compositions and arrangements than past performances.

Fagaly said he is excited to be showcasing this event.

"We try to do something interesting every show, but still incorporate contemporary classic pieces at the same time," he said.

Fagaly expressed his exhilaration about the show as well as his praise for the graduating instrument players.

"All of the players are talented musicians and will go on to do great things," he said.

Tickets for adults are $5 and $3 for students.
