Panther Briefs: Tennis sponsoring spring clinic in May
Issue date: 4/22/09 Section: Sports
Eastern head tennis coach John Blackburn is planning a special one-day Spring Tennis Clinic to be held May 3 for youths ages 7 to 18, according to a press release form Eastern's sports information.
Players of all abilities are encouraged to attend the informative clinic, which will take place between 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Darling Courts (or in the Lantz Fieldhouse because of inclement weather) and costs $75 per participant.
The purpose of the special clinic is to raise funds for Eastern assistant coach Andres Weisskopf, who is an active member of the El Salvador's Davis Cup Team, and who has been invited to participate in the prestigious World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.
One hundred percent of the funds raised will support his training, preparation and travel expenses.
"We're really excited for Andres to have this opportunity to represent his home country, it's a big honor, so we're going to give 100 percent of the proceeds of the clinic to support his travel and training," Blackburn said. "This will be a great clinic that will focus on stroke mechanics and tactics that will be perfect for junior players of all ages and levels of play."
Blackburn and a staff of current and former Eastern varsity tennis players and coaches will be in charge of the clinic, which will also feature detailed instruction on proper tennis mechanics, match play tactics and mental toughness. The clinic will be the perfect environment to learn the fundamentals of the game, as well as prepare for U.S. Tennis Association tournaments and high school tennis.

Deadline to register is April 30.
