Eastern students and local businesses are collecting recyclable materials today.

Recyclables can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Library and South Quad. Vehicles can unload in the parking lot north of O'Brien Stadium and Lantz Arena from 3 to 7 p.m.

Accepted items include glass, plastics, light bulbs, gently used clothing and small electronics.

The event is sponsored by the Residence Hall Association's Environmental Awareness Committee and local recycling firms Veolia and eRecycling.

Volunteers wanted for Panther Service Day

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and local residents are invited to participate in the seventh annual Panther Service Day on Saturday.

Panther Service Day 2009 will begin with an EIU/Coles County Community Brunch, sponsored by the EIU Alumni Association, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the front of Old Main, followed by an opening ceremony. In case of inclement weather, the brunch will be moved inside. From noon to 4 p.m., participants will be assigned specific service projects.

Volunteers are asked to designate the category of their interest: elderly care/support, nature/conservation, relief/disaster support or youth development/outreach.

Those interested in volunteering or attending these events should contact Ryan Kerch, student vice president for student affairs, at rmkerch@eiu.edu or 581-7673.
