Panther Briefs: Track teams place highly at Memphis Invitational

The Eastern men's track team won its second-straight team title.

The Panthers won the Memphis Invitational Friday and Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.

The men's team won seven events.

Eastern sophomore Tyler Arnholt won the discus, and junior Ian Winston won the high jump for the field events.

Freshman DeMarcus Brooks won the 100-meter dash. Red-shirt freshman Zye Boey won the 200-meter dash.

Senior Brenton Pegues won the 400-meter dash. The Panthers also picked up victories in the 400-meter relay and the 1,600-meter relay.

In other action, Eastern senior Nick Atkinson finished third in the 1,500-meter run at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet Friday in Terre Haute, Ind. He finished in 3 minutes, 57.16 seconds.

The Panthers return to action next weekend when they head to the Drake Relays and the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Twilight.


Women's track finish second

The Eastern women's track team finished as runner-up at the Memphis Invitational Friday and Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.

Junior Chandra Golden won the 100-meter dash, and senior Shawana Smith won the 200-meter dash.

They also picked victories in the 400-meter relay and the 1,600-meter relay.

The Panthers return to action next weekend when they head to the Drake Relays and the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Twilight.


Men's golf wins triangular

The Eastern men's golf team won a triangular meet between Chicago State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Friday at the Mattoon Country Club.

Sophomore Francisco Cherizola took medalist honors with a one-under-par 71 as the Panthers finished with 295 strokes.

Freshman Kevin Flack shot a one-over-par 73, and senior Matt Davis shot a two-over-par 74.

The Panthers return to action at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships April 27-29 at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala.


Former Eastern wrestler inducted into hall of fame

Former Eastern wrestler Bernie Ruettiger was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame Saturday.

Ruettiger wrestled at Eastern in the late 1970s and early 1980s under former head coaches Ron Clinton and Ralph McCausland.

Ruettiger was the head wrestling coach in 1986 at Clifton Central High School.

He then moved on to Bradley-Bourbonnais in 1989, and since 2000 he has been the head coach at Minooka High School.


Softball sets single-season home run record

Despite being swept in its weekend series against Morehead State, the Eastern softball team broke a program record.

Freshman left fielder Hayley Pieper's third career home run in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader set a new Eastern softball record for most team home runs in a season.

The home run was Eastern's 29th of the season, breaking a record that had stood since the 2005 season.
