Letter to the Editor: Give credit where it's due

For those of you who claim Student Government hasn't done anything for the student body, perhaps you may want to take a look at this.

Let's start from the top.

Problem: Our steam plant has seen better days. It was built in the 1920s. We need a new one badly. Currently, there is a bill in the Illinois Senate that would approve special funding to build a brand new, state-of-the-art steam plant. But if this bill fails, the funding might have to come out of the students' pockets. This is not good.

Enter Student Senate:

Solution: For the past week, Student Senate has spearheaded a letter-writing campaign. These letters will be sent to Springfield in the hope of persuading legislators to vote in favor of this steam plant bill. Student Senators and executives have been sitting outside the food court asking students to sign these letters.

Because of Student Senate, more than 1,500 letters will be sent to Springfield this week.

Still not impressed? Did you know that Student Government regularly sends student lobbyists to Springfield to lobby for the needs of Eastern? It's called Student Action Team. This Wednesday, Student Action Team will travel to Springfield to lobby for the steam plant bill, face to face with legislators.

All of this is for the good of the student body. This is so you don't have to pay higher student fees to pay for this steam plant. So please, show some respect and give credit where credit is due.

While the letter campaign HAS been quite impressive, Lobby Day most likely will not be. Eastern's small group of student, faculty, and administrators who will be acting as lobbyists will be drowned out by the thousands of other lobbyists -- many of which will be way more passionate and determined. In my opinion, those who do not 'give a shit' are those who aren't paying for their own educations, who don't face the choice of "do I pay my cell phone bill or buy food this week?" As someone who has been faced with this very decision, I find this a very important issue considering it affects how much I am forced to pay in student fees. (Continued…)

1,500 letters, out of 12,000 students!?!?! Good job Scherle. Why don't you stop "trying" to be a leader and just be a college student!

PS. SAE is for losers!
