Letter to the Editor: Golf deserves better
Issue date: 4/20/09 Section: Opinions
I just wanted to comment on the article "Exciting time for spring sports" that was in Monday's paper.
I like that you gave each team proper recognition and an overview of their seasons thus far. However, there was one spring sport you forgot about: golf.
This season, both the men's and women's teams have showed good tournament play, yet it seems they are always overlooked in The Daily Eastern News. I know there are articles online, but that doesn't give them the recognition they deserve.
My roommate is on the women's team, and let me tell you, they work and put in as much effort as any other team on campus.
Even when it is raining or freezing, she goes to the course for as long as she can stand it. On nice days, it's not uncommon for her to be out there for four or more hours at a time.
Continuing with this theme, not only do they not get noticed in the paper, but they also do not get noticed by the school in regards to the budget. The school does not fund their uniforms, towels, etc. They are donated by one of the generous parents. Their budget is so small they have to decide between spending money on uniforms or getting to go to the 10 tournaments they do play in.
I understand the budget has nothing to do with The DEN, but I feel it shows the lack of support they really do have.
Again, it was a good article. I just feel that it is time golf gets the recognition it deserves.
