Student-chosen awards to be given to 4 professors at banquet

Four professors are being awarded with the Student Distinguished Professors Award at 5 p.m. today in 7th Street Underground.
The professors being honored are Daniel Carter, Steve Benner, Ryan Hendrickson and Sally Turner.
Jackie Alexander, vice president for academic affairs, said winners were chosen based on their students' application and written statement.
Carter, professor of early childhood, elementary and middle education, received the Student Distinguished Professor Award Overall Winner. Carter was nominated by elementary education major Jennifer Price and four others.
"He is the most amazing professor that I have had through my entire time spent at Eastern," Price said. "Dr. Carter gave each and every one of his students, especially myself, so much confidence. He taught us never to second-guess ourselves and that we are and will continue to be great educators."
She said even though Carter is not her professor this semester, he takes time to talk to her and one of her friends. She said Carter is a model for students and professors alike.
Student Senate member Jarrod Scherle nominated Benner, an accounting instructor. Benner won the Student Distinguished Professor of Academic Support award.
Scherle, a junior business major, changed his major from physics to business and Benner was his first accounting teacher.
"It was probably the best class experience at my time at Eastern," Scherle said. "Everything would make sense the way he would explain (material)."
He said Benner would have accounting cycles, packets with typical business transactions that his students would have to journalize, post them to ledgers and prepare reports.
Hendrickson, a political science professor, was named the Student Distinguished Professor for Academic Subject.
Student Senate member Chris Kromphardt, a senior political science major, nominated him.
Turner, associate professor of journalism, was nominated by sophomore journalism major Emily Steele.
Turner will receive the Student Distinguished Professor for Academic Service award.
Alexander developed the Students Distinguished Professors Award with the help of Student Life graduate assistant Adrian Rosado.
This contest was for students to nominate a teacher who made a difference in the learning experience.
The professors will be introduced with a presentation by Alexander based off what their individual nominations said.
"Eastern has been needing something like this because students have no way of thanking their professors like this," Alexander said.
Alexander said 44 applications out of 200 were completed.
She hopes there will be more completed applications next year so three professors per college would get an award instead of just four from the entire university.
