Issue date: 4/15/09 Section: Sports
The Eastern women's golf team finished the regular season impressively by capturing the Loyola of Chicago Invitational team title on Monday afternoon at Wilmette Golf Course in Wilmette.
Eastern held onto the team lead at the eight-squad meet, besting their day one Sunday total of 317 by cutting off 13 total strokes for a 304 final round, all while playing in less than ideal golfing conditions on Monday.
The Panthers' plus-53 total of 621 was eight strokes ahead of second place Northern Illinois (633/plus-65).
Senior Carrie Riordan led all Panthers with a 12-over-par 154, as she fired a 79 on day one and a 75 on the final leg. It was her best finish of the spring season, after twice taking home a second place honor last fall.
Junior Katie Imburgia, fresh off her first-ever Ohio Valley Conference Female Golfer of the Week honor last week, shot a 13-over-par 155 (79-76) to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place.
Also taking home a top 10 finish were senior Michelle Anderson and junior Jaymie Voorhees, as the two fired a 158 (plus-16) and 159 (plus-17) to earn ninth and 10th place marks, respectively.
Freshmen Kathryn Koester finished tied for 22nd (164/plus-22) for the final Panther scorer at the meet, while classmate Sarah Magee, playing independently, finished tied for 32nd with 171 (plus-29).
The last team title for the Eastern women's golf title occurred during the fall season.
The Panthers opened the fall season by capturing the team title at the Chicago State Invitational.
Eastern will look to keep the momentum going for the upcoming end-of-season Ohio Valley Conference Championship, set for April 23-25. Eastern Kentucky will play host at the three-day event, being played at the Crooked Creek Golf Course down in London, Ky. The Panthers finished fourth last season.
Kreke earns another league honor
Eastern senior shortstop Jordan Kreke earned another Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week. Kreke's earned this honor for the third time this season. He is the first OVC position player to be honored three times in a season since 1988 (the year in which the league archives for the award date back to).
He was 10-for-17 with four doubles, three homers, 11 RBIs and nine runs scored last week. He hit a three-run shot in Wednesday's win against Indiana State and posted his second multi-homer game in Saturday's rubber game win at Tennessee Martin. The senior hit his first career grand slam and the second by a Panther this season in the eighth inning Saturday.
Baseball holds national rankings
The Eastern baseball team retained its national ranking in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30 poll.
The Panthers (24-6, 9-1 OVC) received the same number of poll points (427) as last week when they broke into the poll for the first time, but dropped from 27th to 29th. Clemson (21st, 449 points), Florida State (22nd, 447), Kent State (24th, 441), West Virginia (26th, 436) and Vanderbilt (28th, 429) either broke into the rankings or rejoined the poll this week and leapfrogged Eastern.
Winners of 18 of its last 20, Eastern continues to be highlighted among the nation's "red-hot" teams in the poll notes section of the weekly release. The Panthers' 13-game winning streak, which was the longest active run in the nation, ended Friday at Tennessee Martin with a loss in game two of the doubleheader.
The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. The Panthers were also receiving votes in last week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 30 poll and USA Today/ESPN coaches' polls.
