Letter to the Editor: A poor approach to sex

My colleagues and I were shocked to see Eastern's Student Government allow the "Masturbate-athon" to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the University Ballroom. According to its Facebook group page, the Masturbate-athon is slated to be a host to a "number of forums, speakers, snacks and refreshments, silent auction and door prizes. Not to mention sex toys, sex toys, sex toys!"

There is a fee at the door, and guests are also encouraged to enter the raffle for "our big sex toy." All monies will be donated to "raise money for an important and meaningful cause to help our region's low income families."

The tagline under the Masturbate-athon is "because masturbation is the only safe sex." Sex is also safe when it is within the confines of a faithful, monogamous marriage where each partner aims to be selfless in pleasing his partner.

Last time I checked, Eastern would probably get in hot water if they promoted anything abstinence-related, or heaven forbid, safe sex within the confines of a marriage. Masturbation may not put a person at risk for an STD or unplanned pregnancy, but it definitely promotes hedonism to its fullest degree.

As an alumna of such a great university, I am starting to question the decisions Student Government is making in regards to extracurricular events that are being offered to current students. I urge Student Government to use discretion in the future when controversial topics are on the table.

Ms. Strange,

As Eastern's Student Body Executive Vice President, I feel as if I need to respond to this letter. This event is NOT being put on by Student Government in any way, shape, or form. (Continued…)

Why anyone would want to question an extra-curricular activity that clearly states what it is about, and what the proceeds will be donated to, needs to get a reality check and understand that we are living in the 21st Century, and Bible Thumpers are not as welcome as they were "back in the day. A recent survey showed that 95% of males between 13 and 100 masturbate on a regular basis, the other 5% lied on the survey.

Seriously Ms. Strange,(the name really fits you) you state that masturbation promotes hedonism? What are you using to back up that statement?

You probably raised your kids (if you have any, which based on your comments I am beginning to doubt) that it is wrong to touch themselves "down there. (Continued…)

Oh my! oh my!

The gays have assembled and are auctioning off sex toys and promoting safe sex!

Hurry! Let's stop them! Shield your child's eyes and throw church pamphlets at them!

Get real, I DO think this event is in bad taste and I rather it didn't go on, but there's a bill of rights that kinda gets in the way of anyone preventing people from assembling. (Continued…)

Masturbation is considered the first stage of sexual addiction for sex addicts according to sex therapists. Sexual self stimulation can actually train a person to adapt to only that and may leave the person unable to respond sexually to a real person. (Continued…)

To all the hateful commentators that have posted - Why in the WORLD did the term "Bible Thumper" enter the conversation? If you go back and read the letter more thoroughly you will see that there is no mention to the Bible or Christianity anywhere. (Continued…)

Here is something that has never ceased to amaze me. You have people who claim that us "Bible thumpers" need to be more tolerant yet in their own comments and actions they are showing no tolerance whatsoever. (Continued…)

This article is written in a very closed minded way by a person who I know for a fact has never been to any of my sexual health presentations on campus. (Continued…)

While most of what I wanted to say has already been stated (masturbation leading to porn and the inability to react to a spouse), there are still a couple of important points I feel should be made. (Continued…)
