Panther Briefs: Baseball travels to play Skyhawks

The Eastern baseball team boasts the nation's longest winning streak. The Panthers (22-5, 7-0 Ohio Valley Conference) have won 12 games in a row and will test that streak against Tennessee Martin this weekend in Martin, Tenn.

The Panthers play the Skyhawks (10-17, 1-5) Friday and Saturday. The Friday doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. The Saturday game is also set for 1 p.m.

The Panthers are coming off a 25-7 win against Indiana State Wednesday. The Skyhawks are coming off a 6-4 loss to Belmont Tuesday. The Skyhawks are 4-8 in their last 12 games.


Softball already receiving early commitments

The Eastern softball team has already received some verbal commitments from the class of 2010.

Sandburg junior outfielder Morgan Biel made a verbal to the Eastern softball program. Biel hit .310 with 19 runs and 13 RBIs last season.

According to the Indianapolis Star, Cardinal Ritter junior catcher/second baseman Jelly Brannick has committed to play softball. The Raiders' single season stolen bases leader (34, set last year), Brannick hit .378 in 2008 and scored 30 runs.


Spring sports set for weekend play

Eastern's spring sports are continuing play during the exhibition season.

The Eastern football team is set for its first scrimmage Saturday. The Panthers will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at O'Brien Stadium.

The Eastern men's soccer team is hosting an alumni match at 10 a.m. Saturday at

Lakeside Field. The Panthers are coming off a shoot-out loss to Southern Illinois Edwardsville at the Governor's Cup in Macomb.

The Eastern volleyball team is participating at the Butler Invitational Saturday. Others teams at Butler include the University of Indianapolis, Miami of Ohio and DePaul.

Wednesday - Full Tackling (3:30 p.m.)

Friday - April 17 - Shells only (3:30 p.m.)

Saturday - April 18 - 2nd Scrimmage (9:30 a.m.)

Monday - April 20 - Shells only (3:30 p.m.)

Wednesday - April 22 - Full Tackling (3:30 p.m.)

Saturday - April 25 - Spring Game (9:30 a.m.)

Wednesday - April 29 - Coaches Clinic/Helmets Only (6 p.m.)
