Twenty-eight-year-old pianist Jonathan Biss has already completed two European tours.

His albums have won numerous awards, such as the dison Award for his Beethoven recital CD and a Diapason d'Or Award for his Schumann recital album.

He will perform at Eastern today.

Biss' tours include one with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in England and Spain and the other with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at nine cities in Italy, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and Slovenia.

Some upcoming performances of his include the Detroit Symphony and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.

In May, he will be an artist in the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's Schumann/Mendelssohn Festival.

"I think this record speaks for itself," said Michael Watts, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and director of the Tarble Fine Arts Center. "He is a good choice. I hope students are convinced to attend because they will not be sorry."

Dan Crews, director of publicity for the College of Arts and Humanities, said Biss is part of Doudna Fine Arts Center New and Emerging Artists series.

Susan Teicher, assistant professor in the music department, said he is a new and exciting pianist and that is why she chose to bring him to Eastern.

"He already has a national career," she said.

Teicher said the New and Emerging Artists series celebrates the opening of Doudna Fine Arts Center.

"We have been waiting for this for 10 years," she said. "Biss is the first person to come and play for this series this year. The music department and Doudna agreed to have him here. This series is to attract artists who are well-known and contribute to the music world."

Teicher said Biss will be the only composer in the area, so it would be a great chance for people in town and on campus to see this artist.

Teicher is an assistant professor of piano at Eastern, so that is another reason why she was interested in bringing Biss to campus.

She said Biss would be playing music from Mozart, Schubert and Chopin.

"That represents the music he is known for playing," Teicher said. "I've never heard him live, but I have heard his recording and I am very much looking forward to seeing him live."

Teicher said it would be easier seeing Biss on campus than in a big city because the tickets are reasonably priced and it is more accessible to students.

Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens and Eastern employees and $5 for students.

There is reserved seating.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Dvorak Concert Hall of Doudna Fine Arts Center.
