Column: Women's golf team takes on strong mentality

The Eastern women's golf team was prepared for this weekend's tournament, the Bradley Invitational. The event was supposed to be three days with Saturday being a practice round and Sunday and Monday being tournament play.
But Mother Nature had a different plan. Tournament officials moved the tournament to Saturday and Sunday eliminating the practice round and Monday's round.
So the team adjusted traveling to the tournament a day early to get in nine holes.
Senior Katie Imburgia said the tournament starting a day early was not a big deal, that no team got an advantage.
The women's golf team finished in seventh place of 14 teams in the tournament, only one stroke behind Missouri State and Western Illinois who tied for fifth place.
"We are upset because we were right there," senior golfer Katie Imburgia said. "A lot of girls were beating themselves up because we could have finished higher."
This play of the players shows a lot about the women's golf team.
They do not make excuses and play the hand they are dealt. At the same time they are never satisfied unless they play to the best of their ability.
Imburgia played well in the tournament, finishing in seventh place overall with a two-round score of 158.
Although she was happy with her first round score of 76, which had her tied for third place after the first day, the second day she finished with an 81.
"I didn't feel comfortable in the second round, and I will work to improve on that," Imburgia said, although she had her best round of the fall there is still some work she wants to do to make herself better.
The women's team will have one more event, the Loyola of Chicago Invitational in Wilmette Saturday through Monday before heading to the Ohio Valley Conference Championships at Crooked Creek Golf Course in London, Ky.
So far this season, the Panthers have fared well and competed with a number of OVC teams including Murray State and Austin Peay.
At the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, the Panthers finished one shot behind the Lady Governors and four shots behind the Racers.
With the mentality of this team for the spring season, I would be surprised to see them accept that again.
