Lupe Fiasco performed Saturday night for the University Board's spring concert with Shwayze and Ian "I2K" Winston as openers.

The concert didn't sell out like the Goo Goo Dolls' concert did two years ago, but it was still a good show.

About 2,250 tickets were sold for this year's concert; however, about 2,600 people attended once complimentary guest tickets and crew members were factored in.

Still, selling 2,250 out of 3,000 tickets is not bad. The vibe was there.

People in attendance seemed to enjoy the show as they sang and danced along to Shwayze or Fiasco's lyrics.

Ceci Brinker, director of Student Life, said when a concert gets students singing and dancing, it is a plus.

"This is by far one of the better, well-attended shows," she said.

This concert, though, could have been a hit or miss for the UB. It is not often when Eastern's concerts fall into the hip-hip/rap genre, but it worked with these particular artists.

"(Fiasco) has what the new generation is looking for as far as instrumentation, and for the old generation, he still has that lyricism," said Lamont Holden, of Champaign.

The UB was looking for something different from the norm for this year, and it wouldn't hurt to continue bringing a variety of artists to Eastern in the future.

Within the past four years, Jason Mraz, the Goo Goo Dolls and Emerson Drive have graced us with their presence for the spring concert - all of which fall into a different genre.

With about 12,000 students on campus, it's hard to please everyone when it comes to music taste, so that's why variety is good - someone may not like a country artist one year, but may enjoy a rock artist the next.

As is always a positive note, the concert ran fairly smooth.

"There were some issues with security of people not communicating, but that is not out of the ordinary," Brinker said. "Some minor things going on backstage will happen with every concert."

Bags were checked before entering Lantz Arena and everyone was required to walk through a metal detector.

Let's hope the success continues with next year's spring concert, regardless of the genre.

I've never seen a newspaper editorialize the vibe of a concert before. Here's a newsflash, most people in attendance sing along and like the performance at concerts. (Continued…)

I am sick and tired of people criticizing this paper. How dare you suggest that this paper write about anything that is of importance!
