Panther Briefs: Softball splits with Cougars

Eastern junior second baseman Megan Nelson had been struggling at the plate.

But in Saturday's nightcap in a doubleheader against Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Nelson came up with the clutch hit.

She hit a single the brought in the Eastern softball team's only run as the Panthers won 1-0 in Edwardsville. With the win, the Panthers (20-14) snapped a three-game losing steak, and they tied last year's win total.

Nelson singled up the middle to bring in freshman leftfielder Hayley Pieper in the top of the third inning as both teams competed in a pitcher's duel.

Eastern sophomore pitcher Amber May (15-9) pitched a complete game. She gave up only six hits, walked none, struck out eight and out dueled SIUE sophomore pitcher Erika Taylor (13-4). Taylor gave up only three hits, two of which were Nelson's. She gave only run, walked one (Pieper) and struck out seven.

The Cougars (28-7) opened up the first game, after the Panthers had cut the lead 3-2. The Cougars scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth cruising to an 8-2 victory in the first game.

SIUE senior pitcher Kaitlin Colosimo (13-3) held the Panthers to seven hits and zero unearned runs. She walked two and struck out three.

Eastern senior pitcher Kathleen Jacoby (4-5) went five innings. She gave up six hits, three earned runs, walked six and struck out one.

The Panthers return to action against Evansville. They play a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Evansville, Ind.


Tennis splits weekend matches

The Eastern men's and women's tennis teams lost to Tennessee Tech Sunday in Cookeville, Tenn. The men's team lost 7-0, and the women's team lost 7-0. Both teams defeated Tennessee State Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. The men's team won 7-0, and the women's team won 6-1.

The men's team (10-10, 3-4 Ohio Valley Conference) returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against Murray State at Darling Courts in its final OVC match of the season. The women's team (7-11, 3-4 Ohio Valley Conference) returns to action Friday at 2 p.m. against Southeast Missouri in its second-to-last OVC match of the season. The Panthers round out the OVC season with a match against Murray State at 2 p.m. Saturday at at Darling Courts.


Women's golf finishes seventh at Bradley

The Eastern women's golf team finished in seventh place at the Grand Prairie Classic hosted by Bradley on Saturday and Sunday in Peoria. The tournament was canceled to two days because of wet weather and possible snow.

The Panthers were led by senior Katie Imburgia who finished in seventh place after two rounds. The team finished with a team-stroke total of 648. The Panthers competed against 13 other teams on the par-72 6,137-yard course.


Galligan named Second Team All-Senior All-American

Eastern senior forward Rachel Galligan was named a Second Team All-Senior All-American by the Lowe's Senior CLASS program.

Galligan was the second Eastern player to be on the of the 10 finalists.

Eastern senior defender Adam Gartner was First Team All-Senior All-American for men's soccer. Eastern senior pitcher Brian Morrell is one of 30 finalists for the Eastern baseball team. Morrell will know on April 15 if he his a finalist or not.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: classroom, community, character and competition.


Men's soccer competes at Governor's Cup

The Eastern men's soccer team took fourth at the Governor's Cup in Macomb on Saturday.

They lost to Northern Illinois 2-0 in the first game. They lost to Southern Illinois Edwardsville in a shootout in the consolation championship.

Eastern assistant coach Dino Raso said the Panthers lost 5-4 in the sixth round of the shootout.

Red-shirt freshman forward Ian McCausland scored both goals for the Panthers.

The match scheduled Sunday at Lakeside Field against St. Joseph's (Ind.) was canceled because of the weather.


Volleyball competes at Loyola of Chicago

The Eastern volleyball team competed at the Loyola of Chicago Invitational on Saturday in Chicago in its spring exhibition season.

The Panthers played Marquette, Northern Illinois, Loyola of Chicago, Wisconsin Milwaukee, Chicago State and Olivet Nazarene.

"It was good that we played," Eastern head coach Alan Segal said. "For the first time, I thought we played OK. It's a good starting pointing for us. I thought we held our own against the bigger schools."

Segal only had seven players, and he said he really only had six players who were near full-strength.

The Panthers continue their spring schedule at Butler next weekend.

Others teams at Butler include the University of Indianapolis, Miami of Ohio and DePaul.
