Column: Golf teams should turn the corner

The Eastern men's and women's golf teams have had some unfavorable results in their first two tournaments this spring season, but don't expect the trend to continue.
So far, the women's team has had an 11th place finish of 15 teams in the Samford Invitational and an eighth place of 15 teams in the Saluki Invitational.
The men's team started the spring with a 12th place finish at the Samford Invitational and posted a fifth place finish of nine teams in the Butler Spring Invitational.
For both teams, expect the strokes to go down and finishing spots to be more the top as both teams should improve as the season goes on.
The women's team has shown in the fall season they are capable of much more.
In the fall, they finished in the top two in four out of the five tournaments they competed.
After not performing up to expectations in their first two spring meets, the players have said they are starting to shake off the cobwebs from winter.
The women's team was right there with the two Ohio Valley Conference teams they competed with in the Saluki Invitational. Eastern finished one stroke behind Austin Peay and four strokes behind Missouri State.
Junior golfer Jaymie Voorhees said the conditions were not ideal the first day, but the team was not happy with its performance.
She said the players have seen what areas they need to work on through the first two tournaments, as they prepare for conference at the end of April.
For the men's team this season the players that competed in the tournaments have been young. Only one senior, Matt Davis, in addition to one sophomore and two freshmen, played in the teams last event.
Sophomore Francisco Cherizola said so far the team has not played up to the coach's expectations, but the team is still trying to get back into the groove of playing every weekend.
The men's team has not faired well against Ohio Valley Conference teams as they finished behind Murray State, Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Martin at the Samford Invitational.
As the men's team continues to compete and gain experience, they may be able to take down conference juggernaut Murray State, but their scores will surely be lower.
