The Eastern women's golf team finished in eighth place out of 15 teams in the two day Saluki Invitational at the Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, which concluded Monday.

The Panthers shot a final round score of 329 for a two day score of 659, one stroke behind seventh place finisher Austin Peay.

After dealing with wind, cold and water from the weekend, the course dried up Monday, but junior Jaymie Voorhees said Eastern could not take advantage.

Voorhees was the lowest scorer for Eastern with a two round score of 160 (plus-16). Voorhees shot a first round score of 80, but improved on the second day with a 79.

Voorhees said she did a good job hitting the fairways and making it to greens during the two-day event.

"I could have played a lot better," she said. "I got the balls close, but I didn't do a good job converting my putts."

Senior Carrie Riordan tied for 22nd place with a two round score of 163 (plus-19) with a final day score of 80.

Junior Katie Imburgia tied for 33rd place with a score of 166 (plus-22), after back-to-back rounds of 83.

Other finishers for Eastern included freshman Kathryn Koester who finished in a tie for 57th place with a score of 173 (plus-30), while sophomore Veronica Bernier finished one shot behind with a 174 (plus-31), ending in a tie for 60th.

Senior Michelle Anderson finished in 66th place with a score of 176 (plus-33).

Riordan said the team did not play as well as they could have.

"We know we have to do a lot better as the season goes on," she said. "We are still trying to get in the groove, so hopefully when conference comes around we will be where we need to be."

She said, personally, she will work on her short game and putting because she felt she was not up to her abilities in that area.

Voorhees said the team faired well and battled, but they need to start beating teams if they want to win conference.

Drake University won the event with a two-day score of 630, four strokes ahead of second place Ball State.

Southern Illinois senior Kate Laegeler had the lowest two-round score with a 152 (plus-8).

The team will return to competition this weekend for the three-day Bradley Invitational, April 4-6 at Weaver Ridge Golf Course in Peoria.
