Panther Briefs: Arnold wins three events as track and field finishes second

The Eastern men's and women's track field teams both finished second at the Indiana State Invite on Friday and Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.
Eastern junior thrower Kandace Arnold won three throwing events, moving up the Eastern career record book in one event and hit the NCAA Regional qualifying mark for the second straight week in another.
Indiana State won the men's event with 228 points followed by Eastern with 177, Southern Illinois Edwardsville with 81 and Loyola of Chicago with 52. ISU won the women's meet with 224.50 points with Eastern second with 178.50 points. SIUE scored 98 and Loyola of Chicago scored 59.
Arnold won the hammer throw with a distance of 160 feet, 9 inches, which moved her into second place all-time at Eastern.
Arnold won the discus at 146 feet, 5 inches while her winning shot put distance of 47 feet, 5.75 inches, passed the NCAA regional mark for the second time this year.
Freshman DeMarcus Brooks won the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. His time in the 100-meter dash was 10.56 seconds, which earned him sixth place on the Eastern career list. He won the 200-meter dash in 21.34 seconds, which hit the NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
Senior Shawana Smith and junior Jaimee Phegley picked up the only other Eastern first place finishes for the women. Smith won the 200-meter dash in 25.01 seconds. Phegley won the javelin. Smith finished second in the 100-meter run.
Senior Brenton Pegues, senior Clint Coffey and junior Patrick Tortorici all finished first and second for the Panther men in track events to give Eastern a total of five first place finishers. Pegues won the 400-meter run. Coffey won the 800-meter dash, and Tortorici won the 400-meter hurdles.
Freshman Tyler Carter, sophomore Marcus Williams, junior Jason Springer and junior Kris Gehrke all placed second in their respective events. Carter was second in the 200-meter run, Williams was second in the 400-meter dash, Springer was second in the 800-meter run and Gehrke was second in the 400-meter hurdles.
In men's field events, junior Ian Winston and freshman Anurag Palekar both grabbed second-place finishes. Winston was second in the high jump, while Palekar was second in the long jump.
Eastern returns to action Thursday as the Panthers host the Big Blue Classic at O'Brien Stadium.
Men's tennis picks up first league victories
The Eastern men's tennis team picked up its first Ohio Valley Conference victory on Saturday and followed it up with another win on Sunday.
Eastern (9-8, 2-3 Ohio Valley Conference) defeated Austin Peay 6-1 on Saturday in Clarksville, Tenn. The Panthers followed it up with a 5-2 win against Tennessee Martin Sunday in Martin, Tenn.
The men's team returns to action against non-conference foe Indiana State at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Darling Courts.
Women's tennis splits weekend matches
The Eastern women's tennis split its Ohio Valley Conference matches on Saturday and Sunday.
Eastern (6-10, 2-3 Ohio Valley Conference) defeated Austin Peay 4-3 on Saturday in Clarksville, Tenn. The Panthers lost 5-2 against against Tennessee Martin on Sunday in Martin, Tenn.
The women's team returns to action against Tennessee State at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.
