Eastern head soccer coach Adam Howarth said his team is excited to get out on the field again.
"Training has been going pretty good," Howarth said. "It has been pretty nice out so far this spring, and we have been able to do some work outside."
The Panthers have seven matches scheduled for the spring season including five at Lakeside Field.
Howarth said the team likes to schedule a number of matches at home because the weather sometimes causes them to lose a game or two.
Eastern graduated seven players from last year's team.
Howarth said they will use the spring to get players time on the field and look to address holes left from graduation.
"We like to get a lot of guys playing time that did not see the field too much during the fall," Howarth said. "But not just the younger guys, but we like to get the older guys out there and see what they can do."
He said the spring period is important because it allows the coaches to plan who will be filling positions in the fall.
"We get to put different guys in different spots and see what they can do," Howarth said.
He said the team does not always focus on the results of the matches, and they don't normally scout for spring matches.
"We want to work on our defense," Howarth said. "As long as we don't give up any goals we have done alright."
Volleyball ready for weekend tournaments
The volleyball team is under new direction this spring, as Alan Segal has taken over the program after Lori Bennett resigned this winter.
The Panthers will play three weekend tournaments: April 4 at Loyola of Chicago, April 11 at Butler and April 18 at Southern Illinois Carbondale.
Segal said he is excited to see how his team reacts to outside competition for the first time.
"The players have worked really hard this spring and have done a great job," Segal said. "They have learned some hard new stuff, but they have picked it up and done well with it."
Segal said seeing how his team competes this spring will be more important than their win-loss total.
He is still looking for an assistant coach and said the team should choose one in the next few weeks.
More than 60 people have applied for the position and he said two or three would be on campus for interviews.
"I want someone I can work well with as well as someone who shares the philosophies we have with this program," Segal said. "We want someone who can get along well with the players and be supportive."
