Panther Briefs: Track athletes earns league honors

Three Eastern track athletes earned Ohio Valley Conference honors this week.
Senior Brenton Pegues was named the OVC men's track athlete of the week.
Junior Kandace Arnold and sophomore Catilin Napoleoni swept the women's track and field athlete of the week honors.
Pegues earned a pair of first place finishes for the Panthers at the Georgia Relays. He won the 400-meter dash in a time of 28.20 seconds and ran the opening leg on the 1,600-meter relay that finished first at 3 minutes, 15.17 seconds.
Arnold posted two top-five finishes and a sixth-place effort.
She was second in the shot put at 47 feet, 11.75 inches, just missing her personal best by a quarter of an inch. She was fifth in the discus at 144 feet, .03 inches and sixth in the hammer throw. Her hammer throw mark of 156 feet, 5 inches ranks third all time at Eastern.
Napoleoni shaved 16 seconds off her career best time as she finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her mark of 11:24.84 moved her into fourth on the Eastern career list in the event.
High school senior signs to run at Eastern
Bluford (Webber) senior Breanna Bergbower is going to run with the Eastern track and field program next season, according to the Mt. Vernon Register-News.
Bergbower was a state-qualifier in Class A cross country last fall. She finished 26th in the Class A state meet 3,200 meter run with a time of 12:23.01 in 2008. She will be running both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
Men's golf finishes fifth
The Eastern men's golf team finished fifth of nine teams at the Butler Spring Invitational on Tuesday. The event last two rounds and was a par-72, 6,955-yard course at Avon, Ind.
Sophomore Francisco Cherizola led the Panthers with an eighth-place showing with a 10-over-par 154-stroke count.
The Panthers finished with 619 strokes. Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis led the field with 605 strokes.
Eastern junior Matt Bird finished 15th. Senior Matt Davis finished 26th, and freshman Gino Parrodi finished 28th.
Football practice starts soon
The Eastern football team will begins its practice at 3:30 p.m. Monday at O'Brien Stadium with helmets only.
The Panthers will continue with two more helmet-only practices the first week of April with the practice on April 3 taking place in Effingham.
Full contact drills open on April 6 with the first scrimmage of the spring slated for April 11 at 9:30 a.m. Eastern's second scrimmage will be on April 18 also at 9:30 a.m.
The spring game is set for April 25 with a start time currently set at 9:30 a.m. at O'Brien Field. The final of fifteen allotted practices will be on April 29 when the Panthers offer a coaching clinic in conjunction with their final day of practice.
The Panthers are coming off a 5-7 season after missing the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.
