Editorial: Help Student Government help students

Before you read today's editorial, ask yourself this question: Do I understand what Student Government does?
You might also ask yourself: Do I know how Student Government operates? Do I know how the senate members and executives are elected? Do I understand the significance of political parties within Student Government, and furthermore, their platforms?
Many students have heard of the Student Government at some point through news or through word of mouth.
Some students have friends who sit on the Student Senate and are more exposed to Student Government issues than others.
Still, many students still find themselves trying to grasp either the concept of Student Government or its goals.
In an effort to boost student awareness, Student Government will be hosting a forum to enrich its outreach to the campus community and to gauge its involvement with student issues.
The forum will be held tonight in the University Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
Students may arrive at 6 p.m. to meet with senate members. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to ask any questions regarding Student Government, and an equally great chance for Student Government to broaden its outreach.
The forum serves as a chance for students to gain a greater understanding of Student Government's operations.
In order for Student Government to serve the students, it needs to know which issues are affecting students the most.
Therefore, if more students attend the forum, Student Government will have a firmer grasp on which issues should be tackled on behalf of the students.
Subsequently, both the student body and the Student Government will benefit from a symbiotic relationship of exchanging problems and solutions, establishing a solid connection from elected officials to the students who put them there.
If more students attend the forum, everybody wins.
Even if you have a general idea of how Student Government operates, attend the forum and voice your opinion.
Let them know which issues affect you.
Let them know if they're doing a satisfactory job representing the student body.
Help Student Government help you.
