Artist Ivan Brunetti will discuss his life and works today.

Robert Petersen, professor of art, said Brunetti is one of the best-known independent comic artists in the area.

"He has many years of experience as a creator, publisher, editor and scholar of comic art," Peterson said. "He has worked with many of the most famous comic artists alive today as an editor of a large, two-volume anthology of comic art published by Yale University Press."

Brunetti will speak at 7 p.m. today in the Doudna Fine Arts Center Lecture Hall.

"He will lecture on his work and the inspiration behind what he has done," Petersen said. "He will also talk about some of the ways comic art is changing today."

Peterson brought Brunetti to campus.

"There is a large group of comic enthusiasts on campus," Petersen said. "I also think curious people about independent comics might find this eye-opening."

Dennis Malak, public functions coordinator for the Doudna Fine Arts Center, said Brunetti has a series of autobiographical works called "Schizo" which are a comic series of graphic art.

"He's a dark-humored, Chicago-based artist," Malak said.

Brunetti has had four issues published between 1994 and 2006.

His fourth issue received the Ignatz award, which is an award for Outstanding Comic of the Year. Brunetti also did a cover illustration for the March 2 issue of The New Yorker.

Malak said Brunetti would also be selling some of his comics after his speech.

Brunetti's lecture is part of the New and Emerging Artists Series.

"We like to bring in artists at the beginning of their career," said Dan Crews, director of publicity for the College of Arts and Humanities. "We like to bring in people with new and interesting works and give them a platform to present them."

The artists can present anything from music, poetry, theater and so on.

The Tree Theater from New York City's presentation of "Road Trips" Thursday evening along with musician Jonathon Miss and poet Luisa Igloria in early April are also a part of the series.

This series will continue throughout the spring semester. Admission to Brunetti's speech is free and open to the public.

This program is co-sponsored by the Art Department, the Doudna Fine Arts and the Tarble Arts Center.
