Campus Briefs: City Council candidates to hold forums

The Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a forum for City Council and School Board candidates. Both forums are being held today at the Coles County Public Health building, 825 18th St. The City Council forum begins at 6:30 p.m. and the School Board forum begins at 8 p.m.
DENnews.com named Pacemaker finalist
For the second straight year, dennews.com has been nominated as a finalist for an Associated College Press Online Pacemaker award in the four-year daily newspaper category. In all, 10 Web sites from across the country were chosen as finalists and the winners will be chosen in October at the annual National College Media Convention. Dennews.com was one of five national Pacemaker Award winners in 2008.
Students collecting food, used batteries
The College of Science Student Advisory Board is conducting a used-battery drive and a food drive through Friday to benefit the environment and area residents.
The student group will recycle the batteries to keep them out of landfills, and the food drive will benefit the local food pantry. Collection boxes are set up throughout the campus and in the residence halls.
