Participation is an important part of government at every level, and the Student Government at Eastern is no exception.

As a member of the Student Government, I've watched as the senate has made a conscious effort to make itself more visible and more involved in campus life.

In addition, we've taken major strides in making the Student Government more accessible for all students.

At the beginning of the semester, the senate decided it was important to build ties with its constituents.

That way, when election time rolled around, we would have developed a relationship.

Members of the senate have visited registered student organizations, talked to people in their classes and approached people on campus.

In an attempt to be non-intrusive, we just throw out the question, "Does anyone have any questions or concerns about campus or Student Government?"

If people don't have anything to say, that's completely fine.

The idea is to let them know the opportunity for them to comment, compliment or complain is always on the table and that we are always willing to help.

I've visited many groups and said the same thing: "If there is a puddle that you're stepping in every morning, I want to know about it. I can't help you if I don't know where the puddles are."

We want to help you and we have numerous resources at our disposal, but we need to know where help is needed.

As election time creeps up, the senate members are working in overdrive to make their name and their ideas known.

As the party system takes place, senate members who are up for reelection have chosen their parties and are ready to see their names in print on the ballot.

Now the choice is in your hands.

The students are in a position to decide the direction the Student Government will go.

So I invite you to track down the candidates, drill them on the issues, ask them why they're qualified and make your decision.

There will be a debate at 7 p.m. March 26 in the Buzzard Hall Auditorium.

All students are invited.

Also, if you see someone wearing a party shirt, passing out party flyers or asking for your vote, don't be afraid to ask them questions.

Your voice matters.

In fact, the Student Government has worked tirelessly to make that known.

Don't leave the decision to be left to the few.

Make it a mass preference. Let your voice be heard.

Vote in the Student Government elections on April 6 and 7 and help us, help you.
