Campus Briefs: City waits for stimulus outcome
Issue date: 3/6/09 Section: News
More than two weeks after President Barack Obama signed a $787 billion economic stimulus plan into law, the city of Charleston is still waiting to learn whether it will receive federal money from the plan and how much.
"We haven't heard anything yet," said Mayor John Inyart earlier this week.
In January, the city requested funds from any potential economic stimulus plan for two planned public works projects.
One request was for federal funding to replace the city's 125-year-old water main, which runs from Lincoln Avenue to the water treatment plant near McKinley Avenue.
The city also requested federal funds to construct an interchange north of Charleston to connect Illinois Route 130 to Interstate 57.
Some had hoped the stimulus plan would also include funding for the proposed FutureGen energy facility in Mattoon.
Conference to address the Middle East
An all-day conference on the Middle East has been scheduled to take place on campus Monday.
The conference will feature three separate panel discussions on specific topics related to Iran, Iraq and Israel/Palestine. Panel discussions will include "The Future of Iraq" from 12:30 to 2 p.m., "The Challenges of Iran to the West and the Arab World" from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and "Palestine and Israel: A Two-State Solution" from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
All discussions will be held in the Charleston/Mattoon Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
Admission to all events is free and open to the public.
