The Eastern softball team (8-4) will play its first home game today.

The Panthers will play Indiana State at 4 p.m. today at Williams Field.

The Panthers are coming off a 1-2 win showing at the Kennesaw State Classic.

Eastern lost to Indiana State 9-1 last season in Terre Haute, Ind. The Panthers lead the all-time series 42-26.

"We're really excited," said Eastern head Kim Schuette in a press release. "I hope we get to play and that the weather and field conditions hold out. Once again it will be fun to go up against my alma mater. It seems like every game between us and (Indiana State) are always good, competitive games. We have established a nice rivalry with them."

The Panthers beat the Sycamores 4-1 in 2007 and lost to the Sycamores 9-8 in 2006.

The Sycamores (3-2) have not played since Feb. 15.

They were supposed to play at Eastern Kentucky's Tournament, but that tournament was canceled.

Men's tennis plays at Bradley

The Eastern men's tennis team plays Bradley at noon today in Peoria.

The Panthers (5-4) is 1-2 in its last three matches.

The match against the Braves (5-4) is at the Clubs at River City in Peoria.

Both teams have lost to Northern Illinois and Saint Louis.

Baseball travels on the road

The Eastern baseball team participates in its first mid-week game of the season.

The Panthers (3-2) will play Southern Illinois Carbondale at 2 p.m. at Abe Martin Field in Carbondale.

The Panthers went 5-6 last year in mid-week games and went 4-19 on the road last season.

Southern Illinois pitcher senior David Kington will start against the Panthers.

"In order to have the type of year we have talked about we have to win these games," Eastern head coach Jim Schmitz told Eastern sports information. "If we put together some wins then people will be talking about us not just because of last year."

The Salukis (3-6) defeated Tennessee Martin 5-4 on Monday.

Schmitz said Eastern sophomore pitcher Mike Recchia will start the game, and Eastern junior pitcher Josh Wilson and Eastern red-shirt freshman pitcher Mike Martin will also be a part of the mix today.

Southern Illinois is coached by Dan Callahan, who was Eastern's head coach from 1989-94.
