Letter to the editor: Gouging at the pump
Issue date: 3/4/09 Section: Opinions
It was brought to my attention during my drive home over the past weekend that Charleston gas prices were inflated more than 18 cents when compared to Mattoon and my hometown in Cook County.
I filled up believing this town's gas prices would in fact be the same or cheaper than the BP right off of Interstate 57.
I paid $1.95 locally, and when I reached the highway, prices were $1.77.
My home county has one of the highest taxes in the nation. Cook County prices were the exact same price as Charleston's prices.
These local businesses preach to keep spending local and to support your town.
All the area gas stations are taking advantage of the population. They are gouging prices, yet they need us to stay in business!
I for one, am outraged by these stations and what I have uncovered. Think twice next time you fill up locally.
