Womens's Basketball: Special time in history

Issue date: 3/3/09 Section: Sports
The Eastern women's basketball team is something to be proud of this year.
Eastern is 22-8 and finished 15-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
They haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 1988.
Eastern has the potential to win the OVC Tournament this season. They have the tools to do that, but it begins tonight against Tennessee Tech.
The Golden Eagles and Eastern play at 7 p.m. today in Lantz Arena in the first-round of the OVC Tournament.
For Eastern, it is only the second time hosting an OVC first-round game since joining the league in 1996.
Eastern is one of three members of the 10-team league to have never won an OVC Tournament.
Tennessee Tech, on the other hand, has won nine tournament titles and 15 regular season titles. The Panthers, however, have not held either distinction. It's time for Eastern fans to support this team.
Who knows when the next time a women's basketball team will win 20 games?
The last time an Eastern women's basketball team did that was in 1988.
As President Bill Perry said in an e-mail on Monday afternoon, student tickets are free with a Panther Card and there will be plenty of free giveaways tonight.
Fans get to watch Rachel Galligan (school's all-time leading scorer), Ellen Canale (a possible OVC Defensive Player of the Year), Lindsey Kluempers (impressive leader, rebounder and scorer), Megan Edwards (one of the top point guards in the conference) and Dominique Sims (one of the most athletic guards in the conference).
But as any coach says, you have to play the game. And with the Panthers, those games will be exciting.
