Letter to the Editor: Illinois should work to end corruption
Issue date: 3/3/09 Section: Opinions
Illinois has endured some of the worst abuses of political power we have ever encountered in recent times. Our governor was impeached by the House of Representatives and convicted by the Senate. Elected officials and political operatives are being convicted of abusing the trust that was bestowed upon them by the people of this state. Most recently, our junior senator has come under fire for misrepresenting the facts surrounding his appointment by former Gov. Blagojevich. These actions by corrupt politicians are deplorable and unacceptable. I have called on Burris to resign on numerous occasions and I am working with my colleagues in the House and the Senate to set forth a plan to clean up our state government.
In the past week, many local residents received a robocall paid for by Republican Party operatives, which was filled with misleading and untrue statements regarding my opposition to Sen. Burris and support of a special election. I have previously made a public statement about these calls but I would like to reiterate to the residents of my district that I do not support Sen. Burris, nor will I. He should never have been appointed or have accepted the position. I was in favor of a special election prior to Burris' appointment and I currently support a special election to replace him.
These Republican Party operatives are putting their political agendas ahead of the people. It is time to stop these childish political games and get to work on the serious economic problems that our state and nation are facing. Every day, a new announcement is made about a major business closing or employees losing their jobs. It is time for both parties to step up and address the important issues that face the residents in the communities right here in my district.
