Let the Women Take the Stage will spread understanding of the female gender through the form of an open mic. The event is part of a one-week celebration to compliment African-American Heritage Month.

The Black Student Union is sponsoring Let the Women Take the Stage, in which performers will be exclusively women.

"Let the Women Take the Stage will be a very intimate event," said Keila Lacy, student life coordinator.

Lacy said even though the performers are strictly women, everyone is encouraged to attend to gain insight and perspective in the relation between society and women.

"The executive board of the (Black Student Union) and I are all very excited and are eagerly anticipating a strong turn out," Lacy said.

Various types of acts and performances will go on, including poetry readings and spoken word.

Lacy said history, triumphs and failures of women are going to be recognized in this emotional event.

Brianne McGee, a sophomore nursing major, is looking forward to attending this event. "I feel like this is important. Women tend to get set apart in society," McGee said.

Dominique Gray, a junior nursing major, also thinks Let the Women Take the Stage is important.

"This event is a way for women to prove themselves, to show we can do the same things men can do," Gray said.

Let the Women Take the Stage will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union at 7 p.m. today and admission is free.
