Emily Battin lobbied for the Equal Rights Amendment and rights for women in Springfield and has worked with the Equal Rights Amendment for more than 40 years.
She was invited to Eastern to speak for "The Equal Rights Amendment: Not Just a Blast from the Past" by the Coles County Business and Professional Women.
Battin will be speak at 7 p.m. today in the Lumpkin Auditorium.
She is the National Legislation Chair and the organization representative for the Equal Rights Amendment in Illinois.
The presentation will address people's knowledge about the Equal Rights Amendment, whether these rights are guaranteed and who is opposed to equal rights.
Michelle Meadows, adviser of Eastern's chapter of Business and Professional Women, said it is an organization set up to advocate the rights of women on Eastern's campus.
Meadows said they try to hold an event each semester. Last year they welcomed Miss Illinois (Ashley Hatfield).
Sharon Lewis, secretary of the chapter, said they did a festival of trees this year at the hospital where they lit up trees and sent them to a hospice.
"We also did holiday cards for the service men and women and sent them to troops overseas," Lewis said.
Women empowerment is the main goal of the chapter.
"We are giving them the tools to succeed," Meadows said.
Lewis said she joined because she thought it would help her network for future jobs.
"They lobby for Congress in women's rights," Lewis said. "We still make less money on the dollar than a man makes."
"We do all kinds of things to promote women's rights. This organization really pushes for equality."
"It is run through the Family and Consumer Science department, but anyone can join," Meadows said.
