Panther Briefs: Track finishes strong at Iowa State, DePauw

The Eastern men's and women's indoor track and field teams had some strong finishes at the Iowa State Classic at the DePauw Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Senior David Holm finished second in the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 48.86 seconds, which improved his NCAA provisionally qualifying time at the Iowa State Classic.

Freshman sprinter DeMarcus Brooks and red-shirt freshman Zye Boey finished fifth and sixth in the 60-meter dash, respectively. Boey also finished second in the 200-meter dash.

Junior Jason Springer finished fourth in the mile. Sophomore Joe Noonan finished fifth in the pole vault.

Red-shirt freshman Megan Gingerich finished seventh in the 800-meter run, and freshman Bridget Sanchez finished 10th in the 400-meter dash. Junior Chandra Golden finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday.

Senior jumper Jenna Uhe finished second in the triple jump at the DePauw Invitational on Saturday in Greencastle, Ind. Senior Matt Fischer won the 55-meter hurdles at this same meet. Freshman Dan Caparelli won the 400-meter dash.

Both squads will host the Friday Night Special on Friday at Lantz Fieldhouse.


Men's tennis goes undefeated during weekend

The Eastern men's tennis team went undefeated at Fort Wayne, Ind., on Saturday and Sunday.

The Panthers (4-2) defeated Dayton, 5-2 and Robert Morris (Pa.) 7-0 on Saturday. They also defeated Indiana-Purdue-Ft. Wayne 5-1.

"We definitely had a strong meet as a team, but there is definitely room for improvement," freshman Drew Grimaldi said. "We have some important meets coming up."

The men's team will travel to Northern Illinois on Friday, which will be followed up by matches against South Dakota State and Marquette on Saturday and Sunday in Milwaukee.


Women's tennis splits matches during weekend

The Eastern women's tennis team picked up its second win of the season on Saturday.

The Panthers (2-4) defeated Robert Morris 7-0 and lost to IPFW 4-3 on Sunday.

They will continue action on Saturday and Sunday against South Dakota State and Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
