Eastern students can drink their coffee at the Java Beanery and Bakery while listening to the cool sounds of Ellery, a soft rock band that will perform there today from 8 to 9 p.m.

Ellery is the main act of the Open Mic Night. The Open Mic portion will take place from 9 to 10 p.m.

Open Mic Night is usually performed in 7th Street Underground in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, but this time it will be performed at Java.

"It's actually there because Ellery is a coffeehouse band and it would go well with people going in and out of the Java café," said Lauren Phillips, University Board Mainstage coordinator.

Ceci Brinker, director of student life, said having the performance at a different venue should be interesting.

"Mainstage was stepping out of the box a little in the way this (concert) is presented," Brinker said. "This will be a test of things to come for having performances at Java in the way of live entertainment."

Phillips saw Ellery at the regional National Association for Campus Activities conference this past October and put them in the spring lineup.

NACA is a conference that the UB attends two times a year to find a lot of the acts to perform at Eastern.

"They (Ellery) are from Ohio and they are a coffeehouse/indie-rock band," Phillips said. "The people that are playing are a two-person band of husband and wife Justin and Tasha Golden."

Phillips said they play soft rock and are mellow, while at the same time being intense.

"They also have really good lyrics," Phillips said. "At the conference, they stood out compared to other bands, and I think the (Open Mic) performers, as well as the audience, will really like their music."

At the performance, the UB is giving away 100 free coffees from the Java café.

Contestants for the UB portion have to be there at 7:45 p.m. so they can sign up to play from 9 to 10 p.m.

Mainstage will only be taking 10 Open Mic contestants to be able to fit into the hour-long time slot after Ellery's performance.

Tasha Golden is looking forward to the show and has already met several students.

"We're looking forward to seeing them again and to connecting with new listeners," she said.
