During this down time the squads will be tapering, or relaxing, in their workouts.
"First, I plan to catch up on sleep," freshman Morgan Roberts said. "From there I think we can all focus on hitting our personal best times during the Summit League Championship."
Eastern head swimming coach Matt Bos said that the team's schedule had begun to change even before their meet against Saint Louis University.
"We cut out the lifting sessions two weeks ago and last week, we only had two morning practices to go along with our regular scheduled practices in the afternoon," Bos said. "This week, we cut out all the morning practices as well as cutting out about half of the workouts and shortening the afternoon practices by about 30 minutes. The intensity level will still be the same, but we just wanted to give both teams an opportunity to get ready for our league championship."
Bos said that a lot of the focus in practice in the past two weeks would be on hitting the teams' goal times.
The goal times were set back at the start of the season and, as a swimmer breaks his or her goal time, the coaching staff adjusts the time and sets a new goal for the swimmers.
Bos believes even with the recent loss to SLU, both teams are displaying effort.
"The things we have noticed from both squads is the constant progression the team has showed during practices," Bos said. "It is important to be swimming our best times with our Summit League Championship coming up. During practices the past few weeks, (the coaching staff members) have been able to further evaluate which swimmers might need more or less rest."
Bos said a lot of the team is exactly where they need to be as far as swimming times goes. He also said that in the next coming days, the team will begin to get their energy back.
"This is the time of year that everyone starts to get a little more excited for practice, knowing that they don't have to get roughed up as much," Bos said.
Bos took the teams to the Eastern-Murray State men's basketball game on Monday at Lantz Arena.
He said the point of attendance at the game was to give the teams an opportunity to be together in a different setting.
