In life, there are many opportunities to better yourself.

One of those opportunities is the chance to travel.

Being able to go somewhere new and experience a different way of life is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.

Books and magazines can never top actually being in a new place and experiencing all that a new destination has to offer.

Don't have the money, you say?

Don't let that be an excuse.

If you can pay for school, you can afford to take advantage of the Study Abroad program.

Even if you do receive help through financial aid, loans or grants, you can receive financial aid to help you on your way to the Study Abroad program.

On the Study Abroad Web site, there is an opportunity at this very moment to apply for $5,000 to use toward a program.

The help is there, if you choose to accept it.

This is an invitation to everyone thinking they will never see past their own backyard.

Turn off the Travel Channel, put down that National Geographic and go for it!

Never settle for simply reading about a location.

Go see it.

Take advantage of these opportunities as they come to you, whether through a family vacation, a Study Abroad program, Alternative Spring or Winter Break.

The benefits of seeing and experiencing how another person lives is a priceless experience you should never turn down.

Take Student Senate member Mike Hilty, for example.

He traveled to Washington, D.C., for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. While that may not be an exotic destination, he learned things about traveling to somewhere outside of where he lives and was able to pass on stories from that trip to other people.

If nothing else, traveling gives you some really great stories.

You'll be amazed at how many people would rather hear a story from your trip to Europe than your night of drinking.

Whether you're young or old, single or married, a student or a professor, keep your mind open to the idea of traveling to somewhere you've never been before.

Think of all the exciting things you will see, all the people you will meet and all the new food you will get to try.

Guaranteed, once you start you will be addicted.

There is nothing like gaining life experiences.

Because college is the time to gain as many life experiences as possible, the time is now.

So there's only one question left: Where to?

I'm thinking of travelling for alt. Spring break. It's a good way to be productive and give back over that one week span. I think others should consider doing it too. (Continued…)
