The Eastern Illinois University men and women's swim team defeated Valparaiso on Saturday at the Ray Padovan Pool. The men's team won with a score of 177.5-101.5 and the women won with a score of 213-70.

The Panthers had won two consecutive meets before the meet against Valparaiso. The win improves both squads' record to 4-5 in dual meets.

Eastern head coach Matt Bos said it was important for both squads to keep the momentum going.

"We kind of knew coming into our winter break that we were starting to compete really well," Bos said. " We lost to Valparaiso last year by a close margin, so it was important for us to come out and perform well."

Bos also said that both squads competed very well in all categories, even though they were short on a few divers. He said Valparaiso matched up well with both squads in all the races.

Bos said during the week he made sure that both squads were prepared.

"This meet, in comparison to our last two, had both two squads that matched up really well," Bos said. "We knew that we were going to have really good, close races, and I think that with our conference meet coming up we are trying right now to fix any little problems that we might have."

First place finishers on the women's side included: sophomore Megan Eshleman in the 1000 free (10:58:35) as well as juniors Kellie Logterman, Lauren Zillmer and Laura Nilsen in the 200 free (1:59.28), 100 back (59.68), and 200-Fly (2:18.66), respectively. Zillmer also won the 100 free style with a time of 54.73 and Nilsen won in the 200 back race with a time of 2:09.98.

In the individual scoring, freshman Alex Green won the 50 free sprint with a time of 24.99. Sophomore Sofia Pappanastos won the 400 individual medley (4:56.10), while senior Sheila Dugan placed first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:29.94.

In the diving competition, senior Geanina Pavel won both the one and three-meter events.

The Panthers were able to sweep in the relay competition, as Nilsen, Zillmer, Dugan, and freshman Tyler Crittenden won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:51.29. Green, Crittenden, and freshman Story Pumphrey combined with Zillmer to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:39.62.

On the men's side, the Panthers won in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.08 by the foursome of freshman Rich Waszak, freshman Matt O'Hagan, sophomore Cody Showers and senior Elliot McGill. McGill, Showers, senior Joe Ethington and junior Steven King won in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:27.76.

The Panthers take on Saint Louis at noon Saturday in the Ray Padovan Pool.
