Proposed bylaw removed from Senate vote

Correction: The discussion for out-of-state tuition will not be held on April 27. It took place at Friday's Board of Trustee's meeting.
A proposed bylaw concerning the definition of absences at Wednesday's Student Senate meeting caused significant debate and its ultimate removal from a vote.
Mark Olendzki, author of the proposal, removed the bylaw from a vote after two amendments to the proposed bylaw were passed. The authors will revise the legislation before bringing the proposal back later.
"I felt the original language of the bill was satisfactory, but the will of the senate said otherwise," Olendzki said.
The document stated that Student Senate members cannot have more than 30 days of absences in an academic year. If the absences extend 30 days, the representative would be forced to resign.
Isaac Sandidge, Student Senate member, proposed the first amendment that called for a 30-day leave of absence per semester.
Student Senate member Christopher Kromphardt asked to amend the same section further by allowing the Student Senate speaker to have discretion over absences.
The language of the proposal, Olendzki said, has no restrictions.
"I and other senators were of the opinion it should be up to the discretion of the speaker on what is a reasonable absence and not, Kromphardt said."
The other requirements, health and personal, still remain.
Kromphardt said undefined absences have been a problem in the past, but would not comment on who abused this privilege because he cannot confirm their names with certainty.
In other business, an allocation of $7,000 was approved for the Conference of Student Government Associations by a vote of 15-1-3.
Student Vice President Eric Wilber said a meeting for discussion of fee increases and out-of-state tuition would be held April 27.
