Letter to the Editor: A learning experience for The Daily Eastern News
Issue date: 11/18/08 Section: Opinions
Based on Friday's editorial about Student Government, it seems that The Daily Eastern News feels responsible for giving everyone else advice. Apparently, however, The DEN did not listen to mine from Oct. 20.
This newspaper, yet again, has misrepresented Student Government to the students of Eastern by bashing the organization for not doing anything this semester to represent the students. The DEN ignorantly fails to mention the very successful "Cross the Line" program, the productive Campus Safety Walk, or even the copious efforts to keep the new buildings, like the brand new fine arts center, clean and safe for students.
Good, honest reporting may not be a priority of The DEN, but it "is definitely worth learning." Predetermined opinions based on half-truths and misquotations are not accomplishments of a successful newspaper, but rather The National Enquirer. Perhaps we should just rename our school newspaper The Daily Eastern Tabloid.
The DEN claims a bold motto: "Tell the truth and don't be afraid!" But apparently, there is no internal policy to ensure that the members of The DEN understand what truth is. Instead, they desperately hunt for ways to misrepresent and complain about Student Government. The students deserve to have the truth reported to them, but no DEN member knows what it is; that being said, I encourage The DEN to pull itself together and start telling the truth, even though it should have happened months ago.
Then again, "this is a learning experience for everyone."
