The Newman Catholic Center is hosting its annual hunger banquet at 5 p.m. today.
The banquet is to help students get involved in hunger awareness.
The banquet is interactive, said Megan Gausepohl, the chair of the event.
Participants will not be given a speech, but rather a personality.
The personalities are distributed at the entrance. The personalities determine how much food participants will have.
All of the personalities are based on real people or real life situations, whether it is a poor family member, or a person who is being saved on a rescue mission.
The purpose of the event is to "raise awareness regarding hunger related issues in the world," said Roy Lanham, adviser to the Haiti Connection.
The interactive part of the event is to help people get more involved rather than just sitting and listening to a lecture for an hour.
It is to help people realize the "haves and have-nots of this world," Lanham said.
While the banquet is free, donations of money or canned goods will be accepted.
The event will raise money for local food banks and also food banks in Haiti, Lanham said.
Eighty percent of the donations will go to the hurricane relief fund in Haiti and 20 percent will go to the local food bank here in Charleston, Gausepohl said.
T-shirts will be available for $10 to help raise money for the hurricane relief fund in Haiti.
The Newman Catholic Center is located at 500 Roosevelt Ave.
