Scary movies, haunted houses, costumes and let's not forget trick-or-treat candy tends to be the subject for Halloween, the October holiday.

Residence halls, Greek Life and student organizations have entered into the celebration for this holiday with various activities for students and community members.

Ashley Hoogstraten, a junior corporate communications major, said it is good to open up the campus to community members for Halloween.

"Who doesn't like children?" she asked.

This year for Halloween, the Greek Life is sponsoring an event called "Greeks, Ghosts and Goblins" which will be held at 5 p.m. today at the Delta Zeta sorority house.

Hoogstraten, who is a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, said this event is open for the children of the community.

"There will be some coloring, activities and snacks," she said.

Five members from every Greek house are to participate and help out with the various activities for the children.

Hoogstraten said she enjoys participating in this event and dedicating her time to the children in the community.

"We like to get involved," she said. "Greeks are a big part of campus."

Hoogstraten said the children would also have an opportunity to go trick-or-treating in Greek Court.

Every house is assigned a specific type of candy for children to select from such as M&M's, Laffy Taffy, Dots, Starburst, Skittles and more.

Hoogstraten said it is great when all of the Greek organizations can come together.

"If we all come together and give back, it all turns into a big thing," she said.

Some students have already started their Halloween festivities by going to haunted houses.

The Minority Teacher Identification and Enrichment Program held its first haunted house at the cultural house for students to get spooked and scared Thursday.

Melissa Harper, a family and consumer science major, said the program made a group decision on the haunted house idea.

Harper said the organization went to various stores to buy supplies and costumes for the occasion.

"We spent a couple of hours in the black house (cultural house) and received ideas from members in the organization," she said.

Harper said this haunted house was worth the time to attend.

"All students on campus are welcome," she said.

Residence Halls are also getting involved by inviting community members to campus.

Tonia Pittman, complex director for Taylor Hall, said there would be activities in Taylor Hall's lobby for community children at 5 p.m today.

"We are going to have decorate-your-own-goodie-bag and games," she said. "We have staff and residents that have signed up to the decorate the lobby and hang out with the kids."

Pittman said Taylor Hall volunteers will play duck-duck goose with children, but it has a twist.

Instead, it will be ghost-ghost boo.

Pittman said the halls would also be open for the children to go trick-or-treating.

"We will also have some candy and little prizes," she said.

Pittman said the volunteers for this event love the experience.

"People that are participating are really excited," she said.

Pittman said this event is fun to be a part of while on a college campus and gives one a chance to reminisce.

"It just brings back the days when we use to run around," she said.
