The University Board is handing the microphone to students who want to sing or read poetry in front of a small audience.

The board is hosting an open mic event at 7 p.m. tonight in 7th Street Underground, located in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

Admission is free and students are allowed to use the mic for ten minutes to do or say whatever they want. Students will also be eligible to win prizes at the end of the event.

Scratch Track, a hip-hop/rock band, is scheduled to make an appearance as part of the Coffeehouse music series. A profile of the band can be found at Myspace.com.

Lauren Phillips, UB Mainstage Coordinator, will be the host of the event.

"I used to always attend the open mics last year," said Phillips. "I had a lot of fun attending it each time."

The event has been going on for a couple years and more students attend the open mic with each ongoing year. Almost 50 students attended the event last year and Phillips is expecting a larger turnout this year.

"It hasn't been this big before," Phillips said. "More people are wanting to come. It's building because it's getting bigger and bigger each year we are holding it. "I'm expecting more people to show this year because there is a bunch of people who want to play that had no idea about the open mic."

Most of the students that attend usually showcase their musical talents but poetry is also encouraged.

"It's like a free-for-all," Phillips said. "Anyone can go up and do whatever they want."

Guitars are allowed, but acoustic guitars are encouraged for easy setup and so it doesn't cut into the participant's 10-minute time frame.

Participants should also show up at around 6:45 p.m. to sign up for a time slot.

Prizes will also be given away during the event.

This year, a panel of people on the board will determine prizes given out.

Participants are encouraged to come up with something original.

Last year, prizes ranged from various gift cards to Positively 4th Street Records and to the Union Bookstore.

Students are welcomed to just sit and enjoy the show and the free food, Phillips said.

"It's a cool way to get your name out there on campus," she said. "Not a lot of people have been down in 7th Street Underground and they will be surprised of what they find down there."
