Panther Briefs: Eastern center earns academic honor

Eastern center Ousmane Cisse was recently named to the 2007-08 National Association of Basketball Coaches Honor Court.
The organization recognizes collegiate basketball student-athletes who have excelled in academics.
Cisse finished his sophomore year for the Panthers while leading the team for the second season in rebounds and blocked shots. The center averaged 5.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
He increased those averages to 6.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in Ohio Valley Conference contests.
Cisse shot a 52.5 percent from the floor while swatting away 18 shots.
Cisse is a native of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast and holds a 3.34 GPA in International Business.
To be eligible for the NABC Honors Court, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.2 or higher GPA and be a junior or senior in academic standing.
The organization recognizes players from NCAA Divisions I, II, III and NAIA.
Kehrer named All-Star
Eastern pitcher Tyler Kehrer has been named as one of seven representatives for the Stark County Terriers that will participate in the Great Lake Summer Collegiate League All-Star Game on July 16 in Cincinnati.
Kehrer is ranked second with a 2.81 ERA and 17 strikeouts in only four starts this season.
Stark County is currently in second place in the Great Lake Summer League with a record of 14-10.
The Cincinnati Steam is leading the league with a record of 21-6.
New coach for hire
Mary Wallace's promotion to assistant athletic director along with her expanded duties as senior women's administrator has left her position as women's head track coach vacant.
The position is being advertised to the public as an assistant head coach, according to Rich Moser, director of athletic media and public relations.
The coaching job reports to Tom Akers, director of men's and women's track, but a head coach will not be necessary, Moser said.
Some responsibilities that would not be encompassed in the coaching position will be dispersed among the other women's track coaches.
Wallace was head coach of the women's team for six years and senior women's administrator for three years.
Schedule change for soccer
Eastern's men's soccer team had their first cancellation of the season with the Oct. 12 match against Oral Roberts.
The match was set to take place at Lakeside Field after the women's team faces Morehead State at 2:30 p.m.
Head coach Adam Howarth hopes to fill the empty spot with another home match on the same date to allow fans the ability to watch a soccer doubleheader.
The men's team opens their 2008 season with an exhibition match against St. Xavier College on Aug.15.
The Panthers' first home game wil be August 31 against UMKC at ! p.m.
